Though it’s important to pay attention in a lesson, it’s not always enough to see someone through a tough exam, and extra work is often needed to get the grades that they want. This is where revision comes in.

If a student wants to get great marks in an exam, they need to listen in class and then they need to revise everything afterwards. By re-reading the topics covered and going over the key points, a student can extend and improve their knowledge on the subject. As an exam is looming, a student can revise the topics that are likely to come up or topics they are less confident on, to ensure that they know as much as possible. This results in a more thorough understanding of the subject and it helps a student to score as many exam points as possible.

4 Reasons Why Revision is Important

  1. Reduces Exam Anxiety and Stress - There is no getting away from the fact that exams can be stressful, and a lot of students feel anxious knowing that exams are just around the corner. When you feel prepared for an exam, as you often do after revising, you are likely to feel less anxious and stressed about doing well. It’s a lot easier to focus on the exam, recall information and perform well if you are relaxed. Revision can make an exam feel a lot easier to manage.

  1. Recall Finer Details - When you are first studying a topic, you are learning everything for the first time. This means that a lot of information is likely to be forgotten, simply because you are trying to focus on the bigger picture. When you revise, you are re-reading the information, and you are able to concentrate on the finer details that you might have missed last time. It’s these smaller details that take an exam answer from good to great.

  1. Determine Strengths and Weaknesses - Revision is a good way to determine your strengths and weaknesses within a particular topic, but also in comparison to your other subjects. When you know what your weaknesses are, you know to focus your revision on these areas to bring yourself up to speed. It’s an effective way to ensure that you have a good knowledge of everything going to be covered in an exam.

  1. Part of the Learning Process - Revision is all part of the learning process. It takes what you have learned in a lesson and ensures that you have truly understood the information, which you can then build upon. This additional knowledge helps you to provide extended, informed and relevant answers in an exam, which is key if you want to achieve higher grades.

We can all agree that paying attention and learning in class is important, but revising at home shouldn’t be seen as an optional extra. By revising, you are setting yourself up for exam success.
