How to get your classroom Halloween ready.

Werewolves howl, phantoms prowl, Halloween is almost upon us now – muahahaha!

There is no way that we could let this spooky season go by without sharing our tips on bringing Halloween to life in your classroom.

---

Deck the walls (and other spaces)

Did you think that decorating your classroom was just something you did before the start of the academic year? If so, you were wrong! Halloween presents a great opportunity to have some festive fun and a great excuse to get the glue gun out again.

Halloween decorations can be brought really cheaply these days. You can pick up many items at your local pound shop including fake cobwebs, inflatable pumpkins and more!

When decorating it’s really important to remember the age of your students. If you are a primary school teacher, you may want to stay away from some of the scarier props that may frighten some of the children in your class.

Add some magic to your lesson plan

Treat your students by adding a Halloween twist to your lessons. There are lots of fun ways that you can incorporate Halloween into your lesson plan. We’ve given some subjects and examples below:

English – ask your students to write a scary story or even read something with a supernatural theme (Frankenstein is our choice or try Room on the Broom for a younger audience).

Science – turn your students into mad scientists and have them conduct some fun experiments. We hear that creating slime is a firm favourite!

Music – have your students learn about horror movie music and how it is used to create tension.

Play dress up

Halloween just wouldn’t be the same without a costume or two. While it can be tricky to get students to dress up (especially those in secondary school), there’s no reason why you and the rest of the teaching staff can’t get involved! Dressing up can be easy too. For example, a simple witch’s outfit could be made up of a black dress, witch’s hat and broom.

Be sure to run this idea by your fellow teachers and headteacher though. Being the only one dressed up would be a real-life nightmare.
