Places in London that are perfect for school trips

London is a popular destination for school trips as there is so much to do. From museums to theatres and everything in between, there really is something for every age group and subject. Living and working in London, we are lucky enough to have all this right on our doorstep so it would be rude not to make the most of it, right?  

Of course, if we were to write about every attraction there is in London, we’d be here all day so, we’ve narrowed it down to some of our favourites. Hopefully, this should make choosing your next school trip a little easier!

Imperial War Museum London 

The Imperial War Museum is based in central London making it easy to reach from a number of London boroughs. It features recreations of WWI trenches and the Blitz, many tanks and planes and revolving military exhibitions - perfect for students learning about the first world war. The museum is open seven days a week and aims to give students a unique opportunity to explore the causes of the war and an understanding of how many lives were impacted  

Science Museum London 

London’s Science Museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and is every science teacher’s dream! The museum is packed with curiosity inspiring activities for all ages from pre-school to universityStudents visiting have the opportunity to learn about space, forces, electricity, health and the environmentThe museum even provides pre-planned itineraries to support the teaching of different topics to help make school visits as straightforward as possible. 

West End Theatres 

London is well-known for its theatres and the many shows and musicals that they host. A school trip to one of London’s theatres is sure to please drama, English and music students and teachers alike. 

Right now, you can catch showings of family-friendly musicals like The Lion King and Wicked as well as plays such as Life of Pi and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-TimeTickets to one of these shows is sure to earn you the title of ‘Favourite Teacher’.  

London Zoo 

Learning all about animals? Then a trip to ZSL London Zoo is a must! Not only is it local but it’s home to 750 different species of animal. To keep students engaged the zoo offer hands-on, engaging workshops that inspire, inform, and empower young people to protect wildlife, and help them understand how their school studies link to real-life conservation and link to the National Curriculum for England. 

The London Eye 

Take your learning to new heights by visiting the London Eye. While it may seem an unusual destination at first glance, the Eye provides students with a fantastic opportunity for a history or geography lesson with a twist. With a bird’s eye view students can Locate and categorise London's main Physical and Human features into North, South, East and West compass positions or even Use numerical data in order to evaluate the purposes of the different buildings in London's skyline.  

The London Dungeon  

An attraction like no other on this list, The London Dungeon recreates various gory and macabre historical events in a gallows humour style using a mixture of live actors, special effects and rides. Students can learn about the Great Fire of London, the plague and even torture in the Middle Ages. With that said, this attraction is best suited to KS3 and KS4 students – sorry to disappoint any early year's practitioners reading this!
