There is a lot that goes into applying for a job or course in education and being invited for an interview can be hugely exciting. However, this excitement can quickly be overshadowed by nerves, and your focus will quickly shift to hoping that the interview goes well. It’s difficult to eradicate this nervousness completely, but preparing for your education interview can make a significant difference. By preparing, you can enter the interview knowing that you are in with a good chance of success.

How to Prepare for an Education Interview

Confirm the Interview Time and Date - When you are offered an interview, take the time to check that you are available at the chosen time and date, and then confirm the interview. If you are unable to make the proposed time and date, ask for an alternative. It’s important to check where and when the interview is to avoid turning up at the wrong place, at the wrong time or on the wrong date.

Get to Know the Interviewer - It’s helpful to know a little bit about who is interviewing you and the course that you are interviewing for. Familiarise yourself with their website, and pick out information that you can refer to during the interview, to showcase that you have done your homework.

Think About What They’re Looking For - The interviewer is likely to be looking for someone who has a passion for teaching, a professional approach and confidence. They want someone who is passionate about the profession, someone who can overcome challenges of teaching when faced with hurdles.

Showcase Your Skills - You will need to highlight your skills during the interview, and the interviewer will want to see that you have the abilities needed to succeed. Demonstrate your own performance, the ability to tailor your approach to various audiences and your subject knowledge. You should also showcase your English and Maths skills.

Prepare Answers to Common Education Interview Questions - Regardless of the exact course, or who is interviewing you, there are a handful of common education interview questions that are likely to come up. To ensure that you are ready, think about your answers beforehand and prepare answers that will help you to stand out for the right reasons. For example, they might ask you why you want to be a teacher, or what you can bring to the role.

Prepare Your Own Questions - To fully prepare for an education interview, you need to think of questions to ask the interviewer. Find out how much time you will spend in school, how much experience you will get and the work that’s required of you. You should know the ins and outs of the course, including the kind of school that you will be working in and the job opportunities it could lead to.

Remember, whether you are interviewing for a course that starts your journey towards being a qualified teacher or you are hoping to secure a place on a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE), preparing for your interview is key.
