An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and skilled Reading Intervention Assistant to join a dynamic and inclusive special school in East London. The school supports children and young people aged 4–18 with a range of complex needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, and Severe Learning Difficulties. The role is essential in providing evidence-based, tailored reading support to help pupils make meaningful progress in literacy and communication.

About the Role:
The Reading Intervention Assistant will deliver targeted literacy support to pupils across age groups and learning pathways. Working under the guidance of the Literacy Lead, the successful candidate will implement and monitor reading interventions (including Read Write Inc.) that meet the needs of learners with complex needs. You will contribute to the development of early reading skills and help foster a love of reading among pupils.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver one-to-one or small-group phonics-based reading interventions tailored to individual learning profiles.
  • Assess and monitor reading progress, contributing to planning and evaluation with the Literacy Lead and teaching staff.
  • Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and session delivery.
  • Manage and organise reading resources and intervention materials.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure consistent and holistic literacy support.
  • Engage in training and continuous development related to reading instruction, SEND strategies, and safeguarding.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C or above (4–9).
  • A Level 4 HLTA qualification (essential).
  • Proficiency in delivering phonics instruction, particularly using the Read Write Inc. programme.
  • Experience supporting or delivering intervention programmes.
  • A strong understanding of child development and SEN.
  • High levels of organisation, adaptability, and initiative.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a supportive team.
  • Competence in using IT systems for data entry and resource management.
  • A positive, proactive attitude and willingness to undergo ongoing training.
  • Prior experience supporting pupils with special educational needs.
