SEN Teaching Assistant for a September 2025 start. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone passionate about supporting young people with complex needs and making a meaningful impact in their lives.
About the School:This is a forward-thinking and well-resourced SEN school that supports pupils aged 11-19 with a wide range of learning needs including autism, moderate to severe learning difficulties, sensory processing challenges, and speech and language communication needs. The Role - What You’ll Be Doing:As a
SEN Teaching Assistant, you will play a central role in supporting students to access learning and engage positively with their school environment. You will work under the direction of a class teacher and alongside therapists, pastoral staff, and specialist educators to ensure each student’s needs are met.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide tailored one-to-one or small group support for students with diverse needs including ASD, SLD, PMLD, SEMH, and communication difficulties.
- Support the implementation of EHCP targets through adapted learning, structured routines, and therapeutic strategies.
- Assist in the preparation and delivery of engaging lessons and practical activities across the curriculum (e.g. cooking, horticulture, music, community access).
- Promote pupil independence through structured tasks and guided support, including during break/lunchtime, in the community, or on transport.
- Use communication aids, visual supports (PECS, Makaton, symbols), and sensory resources to enhance pupil understanding and engagement.
- Support with personal care and manual handling for pupils who require it (full training will be provided).
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to assessments, reviews, and meetings as required.
- Help maintain a safe, calm, and inclusive learning environment where pupils feel valued and secure.
What We’re Looking For:We welcome applications from experienced SEN support workers, teaching assistants, learning mentors, or care workers - as well as those with transferable skills from youth work or social care. Above all, we are seeking someone compassionate, reliable, and committed to supporting vulnerable young people.
Essential Qualities:- A genuine passion for working with children and young people with special educational needs.
- Resilience, emotional intelligence, and a nurturing approach to behaviour support.
- Good literacy and communication skills, with the ability to follow behaviour plans, routines, and EHCPs.
- A team player who can collaborate effectively with staff, therapists, families, and external professionals.
Desirable (but not essential):- Experience working in a school or SEN environment.
- Familiarity with PECS, Makaton, sensory integration, or Team Teach strategies.
- Relevant qualifications (e.g. CACHE, NVQ Level 2/3, or similar).
- Training in moving & handling, safeguarding, or behaviour management.
